In 1818, Franz Xaver Gruber wrote the melody of the world-famous Christmas song “Silent Night, Holy Night”. The text was authored by Josef Mohr. At the time, Gruber was an organist and teacher in Arnsdorf near Oberndorf and also functioned as the sacristan and organist at the parish church of Oberndorf.
He became a teacher in Berndorf in 1829. He then worked as the choir master and organist in the parish church of Hallein for thirty years, from 1833 to 1863. The house where he lived and died is located directly next to the parish church in Hallein along with his grave. Now the house contains a museum about his life and work.
Gruber wrote church music and died in 1863 as a respected citizen of Hallein.
